Biography, education, career:

In 1962—1989 Norbertas Velyus worked at the Institute of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. In 1984 he was appointed academic advisor of the Encyclopaedia of the Soviet Lithuania project. In 1989 he defended his Doctoral Dissertation, titled The Chthonic World in Lithuanian Mythology. He worked at the Department of Anthropology, University of Vitovt the Great, Kaunas, where he was later appointed Head of the Department of Ethnography and Folklore. In 1990 he became a leading researcher at the Institute of Lithuanian Literature and Folklore.
