Biography, education, career:
In 1951 Boris Kaloev defended his Candidate’s Dissertation, titled Mozdok Ossetians (A Historical and Ethnographic Research). On 12 December 1969 he defended his Doctoral Dissertation, titled Ossetians. The Problem of Ethnogenesis and An Ethnographic Portrait. In 1940-1946 he served in the Soviet Army; Kaloev participated in the Great Patriotic War. In 1950-2006 he successively occupied the positions of junior researcher, senior researcher, lead researcher, and chief researcher at the Department of the Caucasus of the Institute of Ethnography, USSR Academy of Sciences (since 1989 – Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of the USSR Academy of Sciences / Russian Academy of Sciences).
