Biography, education, career:
On 17 December 1973 Stella Gubaeva defended her Candidate’s Dissertation at the Institute of Ethnography of the USSR Academy of Sciences; it was titled Ethnonyms in the Toponymy of the Fergana Valley. On 13 October 1992 she defended her Doctoral Dissertation at the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of RAS; it was titled The Main Trends in Ethnic Processes in the Fergana Valley in late 19th – early 20th Centuries (Toward the Problem of Late Stages of the Ethnic History of Central Asia). In 1965‑1994 Gubaeva successively occupied the positions of Lecturer, Associate Professor, Full Professor and Head of the Department of Ethnography of Fergana State Pedagogical Institute. She participated in over 15 expeditions in the Fergana Valley.
