Biography, education, career:
In 1956, in the Institute of Ethnography he defended his Candidate’s Dissertation titled The Settlement of the Mordvins in the 19th – 20th centuries. In 1969 he defended his Doctoral Dissertation on the book The Dynamics of the number of peoples. Research methodology and main factors. In 1942 –1945 he participated in the Great Patriotic war. In 1950‑1953 ‑ the engineer-topographer, senior engineering topographer at the Moscow Project Bureau of Glavmosstroy of the USSR. In 1956–1980 – junior researcher, senior researcher at the Laboratory of Ethnic Statistics and Cartography; in 1980–1981–head of the Laboratory for the Complex Study of the Phenomenon of Longevity; in 1981–1992 – head of the Sector of Ethnic Ecology of the Institute of Ethnography of the USSR; since 1992 – chief researcher of the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology. Professor of ethnography (1986).
