Biography, education, career:

On 26 June 1973, at the Institute of Ethnography, Natalia Volkova defended her Candidate Dissertation, titled Ethnic Composition of the North Caucasus Population in the 19th – early 20th Centuries. From 1959 she successively occupied the positions of research engineer, junior researcher, senior researcher, leading researcher at the Department of Caucasus of the Institute of Ethnography of the USSR Academy of Sciences / Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of RAS. In 1981‑1991 she was Deputy Editor-in Chief of Sovetskaya Etnografiya (Soviet Ethnography). Volkova was an experienced field researcher.
