Biography, education, career:
From 1918 – privat-docent (free-lance lecturer), from 1923 – Associate Professor, in 1925–1948 – Professor at the Department of Anthropology, Moscow State Univercity. In 1925‑1932 he held the position of Head of the Department of Anthropology; up until 1930 – Director of Research Institute for Anthropology, Moscow State University. In 1943‑1948 – Head of the Department of Anthropology, Institute of Ethnography of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1948‑1955 – senior researcher at the Leningrad Branch of the Institute of Ethnography of the USSR Academy of Sciences. On 4 March 1969 he retired and was senior research advisor for the Institute of Ethnography of the USSR Academy of Sciences.
