Biography, education, career:
In 1993 Dmitry Bondarenko defended his Candidate Dissertation, titled Benin on the Eve of the First Contacts with Europeans. Evolutionary and Civilizational Peculiarities. In 2000 he defended his Doctoral Dissertation, titled Pre-imperial Benin: Formation and Evolution of the Socio-Political Institutions System. Since 2016 Bondarenko is a Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences. Since September 1996 he has taught at Russian State University for the Humanities; Professor at the Centre for Social Anthropology since its inception. Since February 2018 Bondarenko holds the position of Head of the International Centre of Anthropology at National Research University Higher School of Economics. Since March 2018 – Chief Researcher at the Institute for African Studies.
Areas of expertise: History and ethnography of the peoples of Africa; History and ethnography of nomadic peoples; theory of sociocultural evolution, pre-industrial societies, contemporary problems of cultural interaction (ethnic-racial and confessional aspects), political anthropology, culture and history of sub-Saharan Africa
