Biography, education, career:

In 1913 Evgeny Kagarov defended his master’s thesis titled The Cult of Fetishes, Plants, and Animals in Ancient Greece. In 1919 he was awarded the Degree of Doctor of Greek Philology for his research paper Greek Curse Tablets (Defixionum tabellae). In 1934 he was awarded the Degree of Doctor of Ethnography without defense. In 1911 1912 he was Privat-Docent at Novorossiysk University. In 1912-1925 he successively occupied the positions of Privat-Docent (1912-1914), Extraordinary Professor (1914-1920) and Ordinary Professor (1920-1925) at Kharkhiv University. In 1925-1931 he held the position of Full Professor at the Department of Ethnography of the Faculty Geography, Leningrad State University; in 1931-1937 he held the same position at Leningrad Institute of Philosophy, Literature and History; and in 1937-1941 – at the Faculty of Philology of Leningrad State University. In 1926-1933 he was a researcher and Head of the Department of Evolution and Typology of Culture of the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography. In 1933-1941 he was a senior researcher and Head of the Cabinet of Europe and the Caucasus at the Institute of Ethnography. In 1932-1937 Kagarov occupied the position of senior researcher at the Institute for the History of Material Culture. In 1934-1936 he held the position of Full Professor at the Department of Northern Languages of A.I. Herzen Leningrad State Pedagogical Institute. In 1939-1942 he worked as Full Professor at the Department of General History of M.N. Piotrovsky Pedagogical Institute.

Areas of expertise: History and ethnography of primitive peoples; History and ethnography of the peoples of Europe; comparative historical study and classification of various cult actions, of folk customs and rituals, of animism as a primitive stage of beliefs; problems of the primitive society, the evolvement of the state and social structure of Ancient Greeks and Germans
