Biography, education, career:
Alexsey Ivanovsky studied at the Faculties of History and Philology and Physics and Mathematics, Moscow University. In 1894‑1895 he also studied at Leipzig University under the supervision of Prof. Friedrich Ratzel (ethnogeography) and Prof. Emil Ludwig Schmidt (anthropology), where he was awarded the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy for his thesis Die Mongolei (Mongolia). In Moscow, on passing his finals in 1904, he defended his Master’s thesis for the degree of Master of Geography, titled On the Anthropological Composition of the Population of Russia, for which he was awarded the Grand Gold Medal of the Imperial Russian Geographical Society’s Department of Ethnography. On 5 April 1913, a Privat-Docent from 1903, he defended his dissertation for the Degree of Doctor of Geography, titled The Population of the Globe. An Essay on Anthropological Classification. In 1900‑1914 he edited Russkiy Antropologichesky Zhurnal (Russian Anthropological Journal). From 1914 Ivanovsky occupied the position of Professor in Ordinary at the Department of Geography and Ethnography, Kharkiv University. In 1919‑1921 he examined anthropologically the starving population of the European part of Russia and the Caucasus. Up until 1929 he was Head of the Research Department of Anthropology and Geography, with divisions of anthropology, archaeology and geography, at Kharkiv University.
