Biography, education, career:

In 1923‑1933 Boris Vishnevsky was the curator of the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography. In 1933‑1937 he was Head of the Department of Anthropology at the Institute of Ethnography of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1931‑1933 he worked as a researcher at the Institute for Studying the Peoples of the USSR, USSR Academy of Sciences. From 1925 he occupied the position of Associate Professor at the Department of Anthropology, Leningrad State University. From 1927 he also taught at Leningrad State Pedagogical Institute named after A.I. Herzen – first as Lecturer, then as Associate Professor, and, finally, as Full Professor. In 1935 he was conferred the degree of Doctor of Anthropology (without defense). In October 1937 he was arrested on the charge of propaganda of reactionary views of bourgeois scientists. On 8 June he was sentenced to eight years of corrective labour camps. He was released in 1946 and exonerated in 1953. In 1946‑1961 Vishnevsky worked as a Professor of geography at Mari, Borisoglebsk, and Perm Pedagogical Institutes, and at Perm State University. In 1962‑1965 he was Head of the Department of Economic Geography, Chernovtsy National University.
