Biography, education, career:
In 1944 Victor Vasilenko defended his Candidate Dissertation, titled Northern Carved Bones (Kholmogory, Tobolsk, and Chukotka). In 1970 he defended his Doctoral Dissertation, titled Russian Folk Art of the 18th – 20th Centuries (Artistic Culture of the Russian Village). In 1942–1947 Vasilenko taught history and the theory of art at the Faculty of Philology, Moscow State University. In 1947 he was arrested and exiled to a labour camp north of the Arctic Circle, where he served his sentence in Inta and Abez settlements (near Vorkuta) up until 1956. In 1956‑1991 he successively held the positions of Lecturer, Assistant Professor, and Full Professor at Moscow State University.
