Biography, education, career:
Leon Bashindzhagyan was born to the family of artist and litterateur G. Bashindzhagyan; brother of A.G. Bashindzhagyan. In 1934 he was awarded the degree of Candidate of Linguistics and appointed Professor. In 1929–1936 he was Assistant, Associate and Full Professor at Leningrad State University, Leningrad Institute of History and Linguistics, Leningrad Institute of Philosophy, Literature, and History; Associate Professor of A.I. Herzen State Pedagogic Institute in Leningrad. Bagidzhanyan worked on his Doctoral Dissertation on the paleontology of speech based on the materials of Karachay-Balkar vocabulary. At the beginning of 1938 was arrested on the charge of espionage.
