Biography, education, career:
On 30 May 1967 Vladimir Basilov defended his Candidate Dissertation, titled The Relics of Pre-Islamic Beliefs in the Muslim Cult of Saints (on the example of Turkmenistan), at the Institute of Ethnography. In 1991 he defended his Doctoral Dissertation, titled Islamised Shamanism in Central Asia and Kazakhstan. In 1987‑1998 Basilov held the position of Head of the Department of Central Asia and Kazakhstan at the Institute of Ethnography, USSR AS (since 1991 – Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology, RAS). He participated in numerous international, All-Union, and Russian conferences and congresses. He has an extensive experience of field work.
