Biography, education, career:

In 1965 Maria Zhornitskaya defended her Candidate’s Dissertation, titled The Folk Dances of Yakutia. In 1958‑1970 she worked as a junior researcher at the Institute of Language, Literature and History of the Yakut Scientific Centre of the Siberian Branch of the USSR AS. From 1970 she occupied the position of senior researcher at the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology, RAS.

Areas of expertise: History and ethnography of the peoples of Siberia, the Extreme North, and the Far East; life, culture and dance heritage of the Yakuts, Evens, Evenks, the Yukhagir, Chukchi and Russian old residents of Yakutia; dance fund of Koryaks, Eskimos and the Itelmens
