Volkov Nikolay Nikolayevich

Biography, education, career:

In 1935‑1941 Nikolay Volkov worked as a researcher at the Institute of Ethnography of the USSR Academy of Sciences, where, on 7 January 1947, he defended his Candidate Dissertation, titled The Saami of the USSR. In 1941‑1945 he participated in the Great Patriotic War and was taken prisoner of war. In 1945‑1947 he was a researcher at the Department of Europe of the Leningrad Branch of the Institute of Ethnography of the USSR Academy of Sciences. On 7 November 1947 he was arrested on the charge of anti-Soviet activity and sentenced to ten years of corrective labour camp. He was exonerated on 31 August 1989. Volkov was an experienced field researcher.
