Gryaznevich’s father, A.F. Gryaznevich, Professor of Omsk Pedagogical Institute, was killed in the war in 1943. His family moved from Omsk to Surgut, then a small settlement on the bank of the Ob’. Here, in a small secondary school he was lucky to be taught by A.S. Znamensky, a wonderful teacher and innovator, whose many pupils became prominent figures in science and culture. In 1947 P.A. Gryaznevich entered the Department of History and Philology of Kazan University. After reading I.Y. Krachkovsky’s book Among Arabic Manuscripts, P.A. Gryaznevich wrote to him and in 1948 entered the Faculty of Oriental Studies of Leningrad State University. In 1953 P.A. Gryaznevich got a Degree in History of Iran and took a post-graduate course at the Arabic Cabinet of the Leningrad Branch of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences. There, while working on a joint project on a new edition of the important monument of Arabic and Muslim historiography Tarikh al-Rusul wa al-Muluk by al-Tabari, having published two unique manuscripts in a fundamental edition Literary Monuments of the Peoples of the East, Texts, he was acknowledged as an expert in manuscripts. At the same time, he compiled a chapter on Qur’anic manuscripts for the Concise Catalogue of Arabic Manuscripts of the Institute of Oriental Studies of the USSR Academy of Sciences. On the basis of archive materials, he published the translation of Qur’an by I.Y. Krachkovsky. He initiated and edited four volumes of the Arabic Historical Literature of the Early Medieval Period (7th-the beginning of 11 centuries) series. P.A. Gryaznevich translated classical works by H.A.R. Gibb and C.E. Bosworth. Working as an interpreter with a group of Soviet doctors, he undertook a series of expeditions in Central Yemen. In 1970-1971 he came back to the Yemen Arab Republic as UNESCO grant holder. In 1983-1989 he was the head of the Soviet-Yemen Complex Expedition mostly initiated by him. He supervised scientific works of M.B. Piotrovsky, S.M. Prozorov, E.A. Rezvan; in fact, he was the founder of modern Saint-Petersburg school of Russian Islamic Studies. Gryaznevich’s several students from Yemen owe him their serious academic success and achievements. Yemen ethnographical collections gathered by P.A. Gryaznevich are kept at Peter the Great Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography and in A.S. Her father, Ivan Edouardovich Gagen-Torn, was a famous surgeon and professor at the Military Medical Academy, the head of Wylie surgery clinic, an d an active privy councilor. Her mother, Vera Aleksandrovna (maiden name – Zorgenfrey), came from a family of a prominent railway officer; she helped her future husband as a medical nurse. Nina Ivanovna graduated from Obolenskaya private gymnasium (1918), then studied at the Faculty of Social Sciences, attended lectures by L.Ya Sternberg and V.G. Bogoraz (1918 – 1924). She was an active participant of the Free Philosophical Association (Volphila). In 1921 she went to Donbass as a culture and education instructor for the All Russian Metallurgist Union. After graduating from the university, she took a post-graduate course at the Institute of Western and Eastern Literatures and Languages under the supervision of D.K. Zelenin (1927 – 1930) and worked for the State Academy of the History of Material Culture. She spent a lot of time in expeditions in the Russian North (she undertook trips in the North alone: from the White Sea along the Northern Dvina to Kotlas and then up the Kama to Cherdyn) and in Transbaikalia. At the beginning of the 1930-s she worked in Mordovia collecting information on clothes and ornaments for Saransk Research Institute. At the same time, she taught geography, Russian and Ostyak Languages at the Institute of the Peoples of the North; she started working at the Institute of Anthropology, Archaeology and Ethnography of the USSR Academy of Sciences. From November 1933 she was a researcher at the Department of Siberia and Northern Europe and was working on compiling bibliography on Ostyaks and Voguls. She was appointed secretary of the editorial staff of the Peoples of the USSR reference book, and of the Sovetskaya Etnografiya (Soviet Ethnography) journal. Her bright scholarly career was interrupted by two arrests. Her most fruitful years of research fell on the period of imprisonment. She was first arrested in October 1936. She served the first five years of the term (1937-1942) in Kolyma and then was exiled to Kurgan region. After serving the term she moved to Moscow, where she worked at the Fundamental Library of Social Sciences. In January 1946 she defended her Candidate’s Dissertation at the Institute of Ethnography of the USSR Academy of Sciences titled The Elements of Dress of the Peoples of the Volga Region as a Source for Ethnogenesis. In December 1947 she was arrested for the second time and exiled to Temnyakovsky labour camp (Mordovia) until January 1953, when she was exiled for life to the Yenisei. She was released in April 1954. The camp became her research field: she recorded the topography of prisons and transit prisons, described the behavior, specific ethics and elements of speech etiquette of the prisoners, made notes on festive and daily life of the representatives of different nationalities and religions in extreme conditions. In the exile on the Yenisei she studied the life and speech of Siberian Old-Settlers (Starozhily). After exoneration and return to Leningrad in 1956 she worked at the Leningrad Branch of the Institute of Ethnography, USSR Academy of Sciences (till her retirement in 1960) and continued studying the culture of the Russian population of Siberia, and in 1958 she joined L.M. Saburova’s expedition to the Angara. In her late years she was actively involved in research work, in particular studying The Tale of Igor’s Campaign. She devoted her last fifteen years to this yet unpublished monograph, wrote memoirs, studied the lives and scientific life of her teachers (L.Ya Sternberg, D.K. Zelenin). She wrote memoirs about A. Blok, A. Bely, O. Forsh. Her stories and poems have been published. Her poetic gift was noticed by Anna Akhmatova, Boris Pasternak, Yevgeny Yevtushenko. She was buried in Bolshaya Izhora, where she had spent her childhood and youth and where she had lived and worked most of the time after her arrival from the second exile.

Areas of expertise:

History and ethnography of the peoples of the Urals-Volga region; History and ethnography of the peoples of Siberia, the Extreme North, and the Far East; Historiography, Source studies and Methodology of Ethnography; History of material culture; Folklore studies (Russian and Bulgarian folklore)

Major scientific achievements:

A series of works on the material culture of the peoples of the Volga region, on the history of Russian ethnography. In 1899 he graduated from the Faculty of Oriental Languages of Saint-Petersburg State University. In 1901—1902 he was a visiting scholar at Berlin University. From 1902 he was a Privat-Docent at the Department of Armenian-Georgian Philology. In 1908 he organized a students’ Georgian Scientific Circle at Saint-Petersburg University; in 1915 the materials from the circle were published in Georgian as a collection of scientific papers. Together with his mentor, Academician N.Y. Marr he participated in an expedition to Mount Sinai, where he studied medieval Georgian manuscripts. In 1905 he wrote Political Social Movement in Georgia in the 19th Century. From 1908 he began to publish his monumental work – A History of the Georgian Nation – which influenced Georgian historian science greatly. The last 4th volume of kartveli eris istoria was published posthumously, in 1949. Simultaneously, he authored papers on auxiliary historical disciplines and source studies.
In 1917—1918 Javakhishvili was instrumental in founding Georgia's first regular university in Tbilisi; he was elected Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy, which was at the time the only faculty of the newly established university. In 1919 he was appointed the second President of Tbilisi State University and held this position up until 1926, when he was fired on grounds of being Non-Marxist in the course of the purge. He was Chair of Georgian Society of History and Ethnography (until 1925). From 1937 until his death he was Director of Shota Rustaveli Museum and leader of the Mtskheta Archaeological Expedition. His father, a Chinese called Zhou, died soon after he was born, his mother died in 1924. He was adopted by another Chinese, a participant of the October Revolution and a commander of one of the Red Army voluntary groups, and his Russian wife (T.A. Velgus). At the age of five he was taken to Vladivostok and in 1929 – to China, where he lived in Shandong province, Shanghai, and then in Qingdao and Tianjin. He worked and attended Chinese, Russian and Japanese educational institutions. His early youth and school years contemporized with the Japanese occupation of China. After World War II he took up Soviet citizenship. During this period, he acts as a translator for the first time, in particular, working for the Society of USSR Citizens. In 1947 he came to the USSR among the first Russian repatriates at the invitation of Academician V.M. Alekseyev (with whom he struck up acquaintance through correspondence). For some time, he worked at a chemical plant in Molotov (now Perm). In March 1948 he was admitted as a first-year external student to the Chinese Department of the Faculty of Oriental Studies, Leningrad State University, where he simultaneously taught the Chinese colloquial language. In 1949 he was arrested and sentenced to 25 years of corrective labour camps. He served his exile in Kazakhstan. In 1955 he was released and returned to Leningrad. In 1959, at the initiative of D.A. Olderogge, a Correspondent Member of the Academy of Sciences, he was invited to work at the Leningrad Branch of the Institute of Ethnography, USSR Academy of Sciences, where he studied medieval Chinese sources on the history of cultural ties between China and Africa. This work was an important part of a pioneer scientific project initiated by D.A. Olderogge. Unresolved fundamental problems of African historiography required to create a corpus of sources on the history of peoples living in Sub-Saharan Africa. The non-literate character of the culture of these peoples had for many years reduced the source base of their history to archeological and ethnographical materials and oral historical tradition. In this context the idea of a thorough account of written sources of other peoples, who have preserved some information about Africa in their literary monuments, became extremely relevant. The research became a part of UNESCO’s project aimed at writing A General History of Africa. At the same time V.A. Velgus taught at Leningrad State University, wrote articles on Chinese ethnography, source studies, and medieval Chinese literature. He translated the works of a number of Chinese writers of the 20th century as well as the maxims by Lu Xun (1881-1936) and poems by Li Qingzhao, a poet in the Song Dynasty (1084-1147), and Chinese ancient songs. He was an expert on Chinese material and spiritual culture. In 1962, on the eve of his fortieth birthday, he graduated from the Faculty of Oriental Studies of Leningrad State University and in 1966 defended his Candidate’s Dissertation titled Early Medieval Chinese Word about Africa and Marine Connections in the Basins of the Pacific and the Indian Oceans (Chinese Sources Before the 11th Century), which was published six months before his death. He started writing the second part of the monograph dedicated to the achievements of Chinese navigation from the 11th through the 15th century, but didn’t manage to fulfil his idea. His articles on this issue were included in Medieval China, a book published posthumously. In 1980 the monograph was nominated for Semyonov Gold Medal of the USSR Geographical Society, but his unexpected death prevented the discussion of this nomination.

Areas of expertise:

History and ethnography of Chinese peoples; Spiritual culture; history of navigation in the Indian and the Pacific oceans according to medieval Chinese sources; medieval literature of China and its bibliography

Major scientific achievements:

Several series of works on the history of navigation in the Indian and the Pacific oceans according to medieval Chinese sources, on Chinese literature and ethnography, brilliant translations of Chinese prose and poetry.

Membership in academic organizations and unions:

Russian Geographical Society.

Major publications:

• Ли Жу-чжэнь. Kleyn was born to a Russified Jewish family; both his grandfathers were entrepreneurs (a factory owner and a first guild merchant). His father, Stanislav Semyonovich (Samuil Simkhovich) Kleyn, was born in Warsaw; during the Civil War he served as a medical officer in Denikin Volunteer Army and since 1920 – in the Red Army. His mother, Asya Moiseevna, was a surgeon. He went to a Belorussian secondary school and to a music school, where he was taught to play the piano. Later he took part in some concerts but never became a professional musician. In 1941 Kleyn’s parents were drafted to the army as doctors, other members of the family were evacuated. During evacuation he completed the 8th and the 9th grades of school and went off to war. In 1944 he served in a military construction division of the 3rd Belorussian Front, was shell-shocked and then received treatment in Roslavl. There he entered a railway vocational school. After the war he lived in Grodno, where he took his school leaving exams as external candidate and entered the Faculty of Language and Literature of Grodno Pedagogical Institute. In 1947 he was transferred to a full-time department of Leningrad State University. In his first years at the University he was a student of two faculties: Faculty of History (Department of Archaeology, under the supervision of professor M.I. Artamonov) and Philological Faculty (Department of Russian Philology, under the supervision of professor V.Y. Propp). In 1951 he graduated from the Faculty of History with honours. His supervisors, M.I. Artamonov, the head of the Department of Archaeology, and V.Y. Propp, professor of the Department of Folklore, influenced him the most. M.I. Artamonov’s influence can be seen in many of Kleyn’s scientific research papers, which continued the course started by his teacher: the study of catacomb barrows, the ethnogeography of Scythia, the origin of Indo-Europeans, the relation between ethnos and archaeological culture. V.Y. Propp influenced his ideas on structuralism and semiotics, as well as his attitude to Homer’s epic poems. After graduation Kleyn worked in A.I. Trenozhkin’s expedition on the Molochnaya River, and then as a school teacher in Volosovo village in Leningrad Oblast, simultaneously studying to take a post-graduate course. He also worked as a bibliographer at the Library of the Academy of Sciences in Leningrad and then as a secondary school teacher in Leningrad and Grodno. In 1957-1960 he took a post-graduate course at Leningrad University (in 1968 he defended his Candidate’s Dissertation titled The Origin of Donetsk Catacomb Culture), and in 1962 he was admitted to the Department of Archaeology as a Lecturer. Since 1976 he was an Associate Professor; his first scientific work was published in 1955, his first monograph – in 1978. He took part in several archaeological expeditions in Russian and Belorussian forests, in Ukrainian and Podonye steppes; excavation sites included ancient Russian towns, barrows of the Bronze Age and the Scythian-Sarmatian Period. On 5 March 1981 Kleyn was arrested on false charges and sentenced to three years of imprisonment; but a higher court overturned the sentence and mitigated it down to a year and a half, which Kleyn had almost served by then. On release from jail he was deprived of his Candidate’s Degree and title of Associate Professor. Later he defended his Doctoral Dissertation and was awarded the Degree of Doctor Sciences in History (Archaeological Typology, 1993) without the defense of Candidate’s Dissertation. At the time of Perestroika, he started lecturing at the University again: he taught at the Department of Philosophical Anthropology of the Faculty of Philosophy, at the European University (until 1997). On retirement he continued lecturing at foreign universities: in Vienna, West Berlin, Durham, Copenhagen, Ljubljana, Turku, Tromsø, Washington, Seattle, at the Higher School of Anthropology in Moldavia. He delivered speeches and lectures at Cambridge, Oxford, London, Stockholm, Madrid and other European scientific centres.

Areas of expertise:

Archaeology (studies on catacomb culture, theoretical archaeology, historiography, source studies, and methodology of archaeology); Ethnogeography; Ethnogenesis (history and ethnography of Slavic peoples; Indo-European studies); theory of cultural evolution; the Norman problem, studies on East Slavic paganism; Homer studies; studies on homosexuality

Major scientific achievements:

Kleyn’s major scientific achievements are connected with archaeology, its methodological character, principles, fact and theory in archaeology, procedures and methods of archaeological studies. The major subjects are Archaeological Sources, Archaeological Typology, Principles of Archaeology and Time in Archaeology. According to Kleyn’s idea, archaeology is a source-studying discipline similar to forensic science in its methodology. It processes archaeological sources, and translates them into the language of history, thus incorporating them into historical synthesis. This theory clashed with the traditional understanding of history as subjugating all other humanitarian disciplines. This concept is not popular in the West either. Kleyn’s works, dedicated to the subject of archaeology (his article of 1977 and his book of 1978 about archaeological sources) immediately evoked a heated debate in Soviet archaeology. In terms of certain archaeological research, he mostly studied catacomb culture of the Bronze Age (III Mil. BC) in the Ukraine and the Volga-Don steppes. He excavated barrows in the steppes of Ukraine and South Russia, and catacomb barrows became the subject of his Candidate’s Dissertation. His Dissertation on the origin of Donetsk catacomb culture also contains analysis of anthropological (craniological) material with vast statistics conducted by the author himself. Kleyn considers his contribution to anthropology and communication theory of cultural evolution as his most significant scientific achievement.

Major publications:

• Full bibliography;

• Археологические источники. — Л., Изд-во ЛГУ, 1978 [Archaeological Sources. – L., publ. Research field: origin and anthropological composition of ancient and contemporary population

Major scientific achievements:

Anatoly Bagashev managed to trace the basic formative stages of anthropological properties of the ancient and contemporary population of Western Siberia. He identified the origins of anthropological types, peculiar to contemporary South Samodian and Ob-Ugrian groups. Factual evidence proves the hypothesis that the basic race-forming factor in Western Siberia was the preservation of undifferentiated properties, due to geographical isolation. A new taxonomic category was defined: West Siberian race consisting of two anthropologic types, Ural and Ob-Irtysh, the latter can be further subdivided into two population groups: Tomsk-Narymsk and Tobolo-Barabinsk. There is a secondary West Siberian cluster of race formation, with two more daughter tertiary clusters: Northern West Siberian (Ugric line of genesis) and Southern West Siberian (South Samodian line of genesis). The scholar studied the anthropological composition of West Siberian population during the early Iron period, traced the genesis of its components, some of which stem from Neolith, and studied the historic fate of early seminomadic groups.

ru:Багашев_Анатолий_Николаевич
Abaidulovaa http://ethnographica.kunstkamera.ru/en/index.php?title=Akhmetova_Sholpan_Kamalidinovna Akhmetova Sholpan Kamalidinovna 2019-05-28T17:33:08Z
Abaidulovaa: Created page with "=== 16 February 1959 === Biography, education, career: In 2001 Sholpan Akhmetova defended her candidate dissertation titled Modern Ethnic P..."

16 February 1959
Biography, education, career:

In 2001 Sholpan Akhmetova defended her candidate dissertation titled Modern Ethnic Processes among Urban Kazakhs of Western Siberia.

Areas of expertise:

Spiritual culture; History and ethnography of the peoples of Central Asia; spiritual and normative culture of the Kazakhs of Western Siberia, including life-cycle rituals, world outlook, and archaeological and ethnographic research of burial settlement complexes of the Kazakh population of Western Siberia

Membership in academic organizations and unions:

Full Member of the Russian Geographical Society.

ru:Ахметова_Шолпан_Камалидиновна
Abaidulovaa http://ethnographica.kunstkamera.ru/en/index.php?title=Autlev_Malich_Gaisovich Autlev Malich Gaisovich 2019-05-28T17:30:15Z
Abaidulovaa: Created page with "=== 08 November 1917, Khakurinokhabl Aul, Maikop, Shovgen District — 14 July 2001, Maikop === Biography, education, career:..."

08 November 1917, Khakurinokhabl Aul, Maikop, Shovgen District — 14 July 2001, Maikop
Biography, education, career:

In 1954 Malich Autlev defended his candidate dissertation titled The Communist Party as the Mastermind and Organizer of the German Defeat at Stalingrad (academic advisor – D.M.
