Biography, education, career:

In 1970 Viktor Karlov completed a post-graduate course in ethnography at Moscow State University and defended his Dissertation for the Degree of Candidate of Sciences in History at Lomonosov Moscow State University. His Dissertation was titled Economic and Social Structure of Evenks of the Yenisei-Lena Interfluve in the 17th – early 20th Centuries. In 1992 he defended his Dissertation for the Degree of Doctor of Historical Sciences, titled Stage Patterns and Local Historical Peculiarities of Ethnocultural Processes Among the Peoples of the USSR in the 19th – 20th Centuries. In 1971–1981 he worked as a junior researcher at the Laboratory for the History of Russian Cities, Faculty of History, M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University. In 1981‑1983 he was a senior researcher at the Laboratory for the History of Soviet People, Faculty of History, Moscow State University. Since 1983 he has successively occupied the positions of senior researcher (until 1992), Associate Professor (1992–1993), and Full Professor (since 1993) at the Department of Ethnography (ethnology).

Areas of expertise: History and ethnography of the peoples of Siberia, the Extreme North, and the Far East; methodology and methods of studying ethnocultural processes of modern and contemporary Russia and Eurasia
