Biography, education, career:

On 13 December 1988 Aleksey Istomin defended his Candidate’s Dissertation, titled Specific Features of Political Struggle in Ecuador (1976‑1984). In 1976‑1991 he successively occupied the positions of research engineer, junior researcher, and researcher at the Institute of Latin American Studies, USSR AS. Since 1991 he has successively occupied the positions of researcher (1991‑1993), senior researcher and Head of the Department of America (1993‑2005), lead researcher of the Centre for European and American Studies of the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology, RAS, and leader of the Informal Working Group for American Studies in the Centre (since 2005).

Areas of expertise: History and ethnography of the Russians; History and ethnography of the peoples of North and South America; history and ethnography of Russian America; Russian-Indian contacts in North America; social and political development in Ecuador; the culture of political meetings in Russia
