Biography, education, career:

In 1949 Ilya Gurvich defended his Candidate’s Dissertation, titled Olenek and Anabar Yakuts. In 1966 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Historical Sciences for his book The Ethnic History of the North-East of Siberia. В 1950‑1952 he occupied the position of researcher at the Institute of Language, Literature and History of the Yakut Scientific Centre of the Siberian Branch of the USSR AS (Yakutsk) From 1952 he worked as a researcher at the Institute of Ethnography of the USSR AS. In 1965-1986 he was Head of the Department of the Extreme North and Siberia.
