Biography, education, career:

On 7 June 1934 Nikolay Baskakov was awarded the degree of Candidate of Linguistics without defending a dissertation. On 28 June 1951 he defended his Doctoral Dissertation, titled The Karakalpak Language. In 1929–1931 he was a research fellow, full member (Professor) of Complex Research Institute in Turtkul, Kara-Kalpak; in 1931–1933 he was a research fellow at Research Association for the Study of National and Colonial Problems, Communist University of the Toilers of the East; in 1932–1938 he was Leading Research fellow at Moscow Institute of Nationalities; in 1933–1937 he was Leading Research fellow of the Central Committee for the new alphabet, Central Executive Committee of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics; in 1937–1996 he became Leading Research fellow at the Institute of Language and Mind, Institute of Linguistics, USSR AS / RAS. He has an extensive experience of field work. He was a member of the Editorial Board of the following journals: Voprosy Yazykoznaniya (Questions of Linguistics) in 1951–1964, Sovetskaya Etnografiya (Soviet Ethnography) in 1957–1980, and Sovetskaya Tyurkologiya (Soviet Turkology) in 1970–1990.
