Biography, education, career: In 1985 Alexander Azarov defended his candidate dissertation titled Traditional Male Unions in Melanesia in late 19th – mid-20th Centuries (on the role of male houses, ranks and secret unions on the Melanesian Islands during the period of emerging class relations) (academic advisor – N.A. Butinov).

Areas of expertise: History and ethnography of the peoples of Australia and Oceania; Ethnic museology; social organization of the peoples of Oceania.
