In 1965 Maria Zhornitskaya defended her Candidate’s Dissertation, titled ''The Folk Dances of Yakutia''. In 1958‑1970 she worked as a junior researcher at the Institute of Language, Literature and History of the Yakut Scientific Centre of the Siberian Branch of the USSR AS. From 1970 she occupied the position of senior researcher at the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology, RAS.
