In May 1993 Aleksandr Zheltov was awarded the degree of Candidate of Sciences in Philology at SPSU (thesis title: ''Morphemic paradigms in the Swahili language system (a study of verbal affixes''). In June 2009 he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Philological Sciences in Philology (thesis title: ''The Niger-Congo Languages: a Structural and Dynamic Typology''). Since 2010 he occupies the position of Head of the Department of African Studies of the Faculty of Oriental Languages, SPSU; he is Full Professor and Head of the Department of African Ethnography of the MAE RAS.
