On 4 December 1941, at the Institue of History of the USSR Academy of Sciences in Leningrad, Innokenty Vdovin defended his Candidate Dissertation, titled ''The History of Russian-Chukchi Relations Until the 20th Century''. On 27 April 1965, at the Institute of Ethnography, he defended his Doctoral Dissertation, based on a monograph he authored, titled ''Sketches on the History and Ethnography of Chukchi''. In 1932-1934 he taught at a nomadic school in Chukotka. In 1942-1946 he occupied the position of President of Bokhan Pedagogical College in Irkutsk Region. In 1946-1948 he was a junior researcher, and in 1948–1956 – a senior researcher at the Institute of Linguistics of the USSR Academy of Sciences. In 1956–1971 he was a senior researcher, in 1971–1978 he was Head and later, in 1978–1996 – a senior researcher and a leading researcher, successively, at the Department of Siberia, Leningrad Branch of the Institute of Ethnography of the USSR Academy of Sciences (since 1991 – MAE RAS).
