In December 1955 Ibragim Kalmykov defended his Candidate’s Dissertation, titled The Circassians. A Historical and Ethnographic Study. In 1951 1952 he worked as a junior researcher at Circassian Scientific Research Institute of History, Language and Literature. From 1955 he was a senior researcher at the Department of History, Division of Ethnography, and Department of Ethnography of Karachay-Circassian Scientific Research Institute; from 1993 – a senior researcher at the Institute for Humanities Research. Kalmykov was the first Circassian professional historian and ethnographer.
