In 1981 Larisa Gostieva defended her Candidate Dissertation, titled ''Traditions of Upbringing in the Ossetian Peasant Family (late 19th – early 20th centuries)''. In 1982‑1991 she worked as an Assistant Professor and then Associate Professor at North Ossetian State University. In 1991‑2000 she occupied the position of researcher at the Institute of Ethnology and Anthropology of RAS. In 2001‑2008 she was a senior researcher and from 2008 – a leading researcher at North Ossetian Institute for Humanitarian and Social Studies named after V.I. Abaev.
