In 1935 Vulf Ginzburg defended his Candidate Dissertation, titled ''The Mountain Tadzhiks''. In 1944 he defended his Doctoral Dissertation in Samarkand; it was titled ''Lymphatic Drainage of the Lower Limb''. He successively occupied the positions of senior researcher (1958‑1959) and Head of the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology (1959‑1969) at the Leningrad Branch of the Institute of Ethnography, USSR Academy of Sciences. Ginzburg was an experienced field researcher.
